It’s flat…

No, the website isn’t broken. We’re in the time of the year when every day is pretty much 2ft windswell. Hopefully something will break this hot, high pressure spell soon.

 

Surf Quality Bug

While out on Ocracoke a week ago, I noticed the surf quality wasn’t lining up correctly with the wind conditions. The NOAA GFS wind model was having trouble around the time that TS Faye was forming, so I initially wrote it off as bad input. However, after checking out the data once I got home, I determined the problem was on my end. After hours of digging, i found it in a section of code that converts the model data into tiles for the map.

In the screenshots below, the top image shows the surf as “Semi-clean” with 15kt onshore wind. Obviously not correct. The second screenshot shows the same model time, but with the corrected colors on both the chart and the map.

It was only appearing under certain data conditions, so only two time periods on this particular forecast were affected.
